Zhik 29er World Championships at Pwllheli Sailing Club - Day 1

The conditions improved after a rainy night providing exciting racing for the 193 entrants at the Zhik 29er Worlds. As the drizzle faded, the wind increased and provided stellar conditions on both courses. The sailors were split for qualifying into four fleets and raced on two courses off Pwllheli.

For some the conditions were a challenge but for others it was what they have prepared for. David Campbell-James, Race officer stated, "we had 3 races today on both courses with 12-18 knots and relatively great sea state for the southerly breeze. The weather is to be much the same for tomorrow but with 4 races scheduled."

After three races, mere points separate the top spots. James Wilson/Oscar Gunn (NZL) and Juho Kotiranta/Akseli Keskinen (FIN) have 4 points both with two wins and a second. A three-way tie for second stands with Tam Lindsay/William McKenzie (NZL), Christopher Williford/Wade Waddell (USA) and John Cooley/Simon Hoffman (AUS) all with 5 points total. Tomorrow's four races will offer more challenges as the fleets will be reshuffled.

Racing for qualifying continues on Monday, August 10 with the finals to start August 12 and the prizegiving on August 14.

And we're off. An excited feeling floating around the boat park today as the 2015 Zhik world championships got off to a roaring start.

Yes, it was wet, cloudy and overcast, but with the wind steady from the south west at 15-18 knots gusting in the low 20s and a moderate sea state, this is racing at it's best.

3 Races kicking off at 11am, launching at 10am with the last boats coming ashore at 3:30pm.

There were also some retirements as the day progressed, but these guys should hold their heads up as this is their first major competition in this boat, all of them are 14 & under so well done for taking it on. It isn't easy learning to sail and these are tough conditions. Down the road this will be a valuable learning experience for them all.

Solid performances for the day from James Grummett & Daniel Budden see leading the Brit pack for the guys and Mimi El-Khazindar & Emma Loveridge for the girls.

The foundations have been set, who will build on them tomorrow and who will come back?
