It's all hands on deck at Bassenthwaite Sailing Club, as the 2024 NSSA National Youth Regatta starts today (Monday 22nd July 2024). The club's grounds are jam packed, with 210 competitors, team managers and 50ish club volunteers setting up camp, rigging boats and prepping three committee boats and many rescue craft.
Club members are rallying around supporting visitors, some of whom are borrowing boats from club members following car issues and one young sailor who's laser delaminated on the journey.
It's eleven years since Bassenthwaite last hosted this mega youth sailing event, where hundreds of youth sailors from all over the UK compete as part of regional teams.
We are extremely grateful for our sponsors - Ovington, 1st Mark, Trident, Sailing Chandlery, Magic Marine UK, Melges UK, Rooster and Mike Saul Dinghy Services. Each have generously provided spot prizes for each day's racing.
On the water, 3 race courses will accommodate 180 boats in slow and fast handicap, ILCA 4 and 5, Toppers and a coached Rookie fleet. Over the 5 day regatta, 14 races are scheduled, with Wednesday set aside for the single handed trophy and the prestigious Mount Haes trophy which is sailed in Firefly dinghies. Off the water a busy social programme includes monster paddle boarding, quiz night, bonkers bingo and a farewell party on Thursday.
The weather forecast is looking ideal, with sensible winds and even some Lake District sunshine. Online spectators can keep an eye on proceedings by visiting www.bassenthwaite-sc.org.uk
