Overy Staithe Sailing Club enjoys a Busy Bank Holiday Weekend

by Jennie Clark 28 May 10:05 NZST 25-27 May 2024

The chance to race for three consecutive days on morning tides at a relatively reasonable hour doesn't come that often but OSSC made the most of it this Bank Holiday weekend.

Saturday saw racing for the Jubilee Trust Pennant. Pennant races at the club are sailed using personal handicaps, set by the Sailing Secretary at the start of the year and this always makes the pennant races interesting! Pete Turner was Race Officer, assisted by Paul Goakes.

The course finished at the Quay giving those watching a chance to see the finish close hand. Thanks to Dave Cooper for providing safety cover.

Jubilee Trust Pennant:

1st Alex Scoles, Europe
2nd Ash Deakin, Laser
3rd Simon Turner, OK
4th Will Worsley, Laser
5th Sam Worsley, Laser Radial

The Queens Jubilee Jug, raced for on the Sunday morning, was sailed quite late on the tide by six sailors in a fairly shifty force 2.

Pete Turner aced the start followed by Spike and a very laid back Alex, the Worsleys, Will and Sam, followed with Nina a little late. The beat was from G to C and was against the tide in the latter part of the race which was challenging for the competitors. The reach to B was fairly tight and there was a lovely run back to G. Race Officer, Paul Goakes, ably assisted by Bernard Clark and Isla Dow finished the race after two laps and a beat to C. Thanks to Calum Dow in the Safety Boat.

Queens Jubilee Jug:

1st Peter Turner, OK
2nd Alex Scoles, Europe
3rd Spike Turner, OK
4th Nina Plumbe, Laser Radial
5th Will Worsley, Laser
6th Sam Worsley, Laser Radial

Bank Holiday Monday was the club's Junior Race, run by Race Officers Bernard Clark and Paul Goakes. It was probably the windiest day of the weekend, and a course was set by the race team which provided a good mix of beats, reaches and runs, and a very tricky round at C, with a finish off the Quay to allow parents and spectators to cheer the fleet home.

Medals were presented after racing, with particular mention made of the skilful sailing by Jessie Worsley, with her young and novice (but enthusiastic) crew. Thanks to Nina Plumbe and Will Worsley for providing safety cover.

Junior Race:

1st Sam Worsley, Laser 4.7
2nd Jessie and Fred Worsley, Pico
