OK dinghy class Spring Cup 2023 at Regatta Center Medemblik

by Richard Burton 19 May 2023 21:17 NZST 12-14 May 2023

Day 1 saw 44 Sailors arrived at Medemblik for the 2023 Spring Cup. A strong British contingent saw new and returning sailors keen to go on Friday morning with a steady 10-13 knots forecast.

Andy Davis took all 3 races in style using his HD, Ovington and Celidh combination to great effect. Thomas Hansen Mild ended the day second, and long-time OK sailor Greg Wilcox was third.

Day 2 saw a solid 16-20 knots throughout the day with a short sharp chop in classic Medemblik conditions. Thomas showed fantastic speed throughout the day picking up two bullets, a second and a fourth in a long challenging day. Andy Davis had a strong showing throughout the day picking up a race win a second and a brace of thirds to maintain his overall lead.

Patric Mure had an excellent day to move up to third overall, and Richard Burton picked up a race win and pushed up to fourth ahead of Greg Wilcox and Ed Bradburn overnight.

Day 3 was much windier then expected with 13 knots in race one and dropping throughout the day with some large shifts as well. Andy Davis had a technical issue in Race 1 while Thomas stormed off into a huge lead with Ed Bradburn leading the chase and Greg, Patric and Burt all crossing the line simultaneously in a tight battle for third overall.

Race 9 Saw Taxi return and Thomas and Greg head for the beach using their two discards up. This left Ed, Patric and Burt to fight for third and Taxi with a chance to seal the event which he did in style.

Patric sailed very well all weekend in a range of conditions to finish third overall from Burt fourth and Ed fifth, and a strong showing from Jim Downer throughout the weekend in sixth.

A great event for all of the GBR sailors as they build towards the biggest ever OK worlds in Lyme Regis. Next stop the UK Nationals in Torbay.
