Capolino moves into the lead with one day to go
More unstable air at the 2013 Audi Melges 20 European Championship did not allow for the smoothest of racing conditions on day three in Porto Rotondo. After Friday's complete void of racing, the Race Committee was met with more light and shifty breeze allowing for only two more races. An attempt was made to complete Race Six in a Series of ten, but it just simply wasn't meant to be.
With five races on the board, a change of leadership has taken place with Giancarlo Capolino's Legionario grabbing the lead from now second overall Michael Kiss on Bacio. Capolino and Kiss have made it official that they are the teams to beat, separating themselves some fourteen points ahead of the rest of the fleet. Only one point separates these top two competitors, and Sunday's final heats will present the ultimate showdown.
Marco Franchini on Mezza Luna and Russ Lucas on Shimmer have a strong battle of their own going for third and fourth respectively. Formerly in twelfth place overall, Davide Albertini Petroni on Leviathan made great strides as he was the only other team other than Capolino and Kiss to submit a single-digit scoreline, moving him up to and into fifth place.
The final races will complete on Sunday, and conclude with the first crowning ever of an Audi Melges 20 European Champion. Stay tuned as anything could happen. As many as four races may be conducted, however the time limit has been set at mid-afternoon.
The final event of the 2013 Audi Melges 20 Sailing Series is organized by B-Plan Sport&Events in full collaboration with the International Audi Melges 20 Class Association and Melges Europe.
