Father and son duo Martin and John Cross have been devastated with the retirement of their Jeanneau Sun Fast 3300 boat, Transcendence Rudy Project, after they lost their mast shortly after 1820hrs.

They had completed 50 nautical miles of the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race in the double handed category when tragedy struck off the NSW coast from Kiama.

They first raced Double-Handed in the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia's 2022 race, where they placed seventh in the Double Handed division. They are the second boat to retire from the race after Phillip Turner's Alive retired at sea at 1610hrs today.

Master Lock Comanche continues to lead the fleet, 8.3nm ahead of LawConnect, with Wild Thing 100 a further 9.5nm back in third place.
