US Sailing, the National Governing Body for sailing in the United States, is pleased to announce the athlete selection system and requirements for the highly anticipated 2025 Team Race World Championship. The event will be hosted by the New York Yacht Club in Newport, Rhode Island, from May 28 to June 1, 2025.

As detailed in the official Notice of Race and US Sailing's published selection document, eligibility and team composition are key to representing the United States on the global stage. The selection process will ensure that the most competitive and prepared sailors are chosen to represent the nation in this premier event.

Eligibility Requirements:

To be considered for selection:

  • Athletes must meet all eligibility criteria outlined in the event's Notice of Race.
  • All team members must be U.S. nationals or have an approved exemption, as per international regulations.
  • Athletes are required to hold an active World Sailing Sailor ID and current membership with US Sailing.
Selection Process

US Sailing's International Selection Committee will oversee the selection process, with two primary pathways for entry:

  1. 2025 Baldwin Cup Results: The top team from the Baldwin Cup at Newport Harbor Yacht Club will automatically qualify. If this event is canceled, the top team from the 2024 Morgan Cup at the New York Yacht Club will receive the nomination.
  2. Host Nation Invitation: A second U.S. team will be selected in partnership with the New York Yacht Club, as outlined in the Notice of Race.
Selected teams must confirm participation within five days of the conclusion of the qualifying event. Should any team decline their invitation, the next highest-ranked team will be invited.

Event Highlights

The 2025 Team Racing World Championship will feature two-boat team racing in Sonar class boats on Narragansett Bay, showcasing a mix of strategy, skill, and teamwork. The event will attract 12 elite teams from around the world, competing for the prestigious title of World Champion.

"US Sailing is excited to partner with Newport Harbor Yacht Club to host a qualifying event for next year's Team Racing World Championship," said Clinton Hayes, Chair of the US Sailing Team Race Committee. "The Baldwin Cup is a top-level keelboat team racing event matching the 2v2 worlds format so we're confident that the qualifying team(s) will continue USA's nearly unbroken victory streak. We owe a big thanks to NHYC for agreeing to have their annual event double as the US qualifier and going out of their way to invite deserving teams who might not normally receive an invite to the Baldwin."

For more information on the selection process, please review the full Selection System and Notice of Race documents. Athletes with questions can contact US Sailing at .
