The oldest video footage of Albacore racing dinghies
by Magnus Smith 18 Nov 10:00 NZDT
Our video archive is fully searchable, and updated weekly with the latest sailing videos, but here we look back at early sailing in the Albacore class. We have footage from 1958 to 1977 for you to enjoy seeing all the old technology, wonderful clothing, and excellent haircuts.
Our earliest footage is professional, from the Fairey Marine promotional film outlining their range of dinghies (see 2m52s). This was in the late 1950s.
The best find was the National Championships 1962, and this first video shows the on-water action.
This partners with the next video, which was on shore at the same event, held at Locks Sailing Club.
This final video from 1976-77 is an hour long and only show Albacores VERY briefly at 8m14s and 9m05s. You may not be bothered with such a small glance, but the video consists of mixed club racing and some open meetings at Burnham Overy Staithe in North Norfolk (UK) and will interest a wide variety of people who knew that era well.
You have to watch at youtube.com/watch?v=RxPQk7wpsAk as we cannot embed the video here. If you are in a rush, there are several sections you can skip:
- swimming - 11m00s to 14m23s
- National 12 open meeting - 21m27s to 23m20s
- prizegiving - 29m09s to 30m35s
- International OK open meeting - 21m27s to 23m20s
- vicar - 41m45s to 44m58s
- rowing - 50m50s to the end
What of the rest?
Do you know the location of any other old Albacore videos? We would love to share these with sailors worldwide. You can submit video links for immediate review.
