GCCM Gold Coast Mackay Yacht Race: Race presentation and winning results

by Southport Yacht Club 5 Aug 15:57 NZST

The final boat to finish the race and dock, 'She' crossed the line at 1409 hrs on Day 4, some 76 hours and 9 minutes after the start line off Cavill Avenue.

Immediately after their arrival, the Race Presentation kicked off in the Race Village, on the Marina foreshore outside Sails Sports Bar, with formalities thanking these and all other sponsors, supporters and volunteers for their assistance and dedication towards making this new race a permanent addition to the Australian yachting calendar.

Special recognition of seamanship was given to the crew aboard Damien Parkes 'Denali' who broke their boom on Day 1 of the race off the north tip of North Stradbroke Island, calmly assessed their situation, secured their boat and radioed Race Control to confirm they would continue to race under trisail.

It proved to be almost a clean sweep for the double-handed crew aboard the rebuilt 1904 classic 32 foot 'Maritimo Katwinchar', Michael Spies and Peter Vaicuirgis, who took out 1st place in IRC, ORC and PHS!

Greg Alder and his crew on 'Top Gun' earned the Jamie Morris OMR Perpetual Trophy, crossing the 01:17:39:44, also winning second place on Line Honours.

Taking out the GCCM Perpetual Line Honours Trophy was Grant Wharington and Adrian Seiffert's 'Wild Thing 100', with an impressive elapsed time of just 35 hours and 36 minutes (01:11:35:59). Grant and his crew's achievement in the Mackay race will be the record to beat for years to come.
