Border Counties Midweek Sailing Series at Llyn Brenig Sailing Club

by Dave Thomas 21 Jun 17:10 NZST 11 June 2024

The Border Counties Midweek Sailing 2024 series visited Wales highest sailing club Llyn Brenig for the third in their Midweek series.

The forecast did not look too nice with winds of 15 gusting 28 and a temperature of 9 degrees to feel like 7 (and it was, remember this is JUNE) should you have to wear a drysuit!

With 17 boats of various handicaps ranging from a Devoti D One to a Topper a course was set and sailing started with a clean start the with a good long beat up to the windward mark to split people up the race was led by the Devoti D One of Mike Allen followed by Andy Todd, both clearly used to the larger lake and flying their spinnakers with Pete Coop following into 3rd.

After a break for lunch racing continued with two back to back races and a new course was due to be set but the wind reverted back so the original course was kept Again everyone got away and headed off up the first leg, with Mike leading the way again but Pete Coop was warming up and finishing 2nd followed by Eric Haselden in his Supernova.

Race 3 started almost straight away after the 65 minute race 2 again the race was lead by Mike but by now Pete had got the hang of the lake pushing Mike down to 2nd.

For those who like long legs between marks then this and Llyn Tegid (Bala) are great, you can barely see the next mark.

It's good to see such a range of boats with such different handicaps and age ranges.with the largest class being the Streaker where two sailors chose to use the Wave sail due to the conditions, which clearly worked for them with no capsizes.

Only two double handed boats out today, being a pair of Miracles from Shotwick.

Thanks to the team at Llyn Brenig for hosting this event for us and as with all these events that we all enjoy attending they could not be held without all the volunteers.

Overall Results:

1st Mike Allen Devoti, D One (Llyn Tegi, Bala)
2nd Pete Coop, Streaker (Winsford)
3rd Andy Todd, RS100 (Llyn Tegid, Bala)
1st Double hander: Simon & Julie Dolman, Miracle (Shotwick)
1st Junior: Nayth Twiggs, Topper (Budworth)
