Men's 64 Active Waterproof Jacket © Musto

The '64 collection was developed by Musto's designers with our clothing archive in mind. Inspired by the brand's rich history, celebrating its successes both on and off the water with a nod to vintage styles from decades past.

From Musto's early beginnings after the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, where Keith Musto and Tony Morgan took the sailing world by storm, Musto's goal has always been to engineer technical clothing to help sailors perform at their peak and push boundaries, all while keeping them protected in some of the harshest conditions at sea.

Protection on the water has always been the priority but following the success and popularity of Musto's ground-breaking technical apparel, the brand developed a strong following from both sailors and adventurers from across the globe who wanted to show their support.

KEITH MUSTO

This summer the British Sailing Team will be kitted out in Musto's new, state-of-the-art Flexlite Cooling range to help keep them cool as the competition heats up over the next couple of months.

When Keith Musto, founder of Britain's number one performance sailing apparel brand, competed in the Tokyo Games in 1964, on the world's largest sporting stage, the amateur playing field was a very different environment.

Keith and Tony Morgan won a silver medal, Britain's only sailing medal in '64. From his experience at the '64 Games, and the lack of proper sailing gear that could provide protection from the elements as well as freedom of movement, Keith embarked on a journey that led to the creation of the Musto performance clothing brand, still going strong sixty years later.

MUSTO'S STORY

Sitting in a dinghy off the coast of Essex back in 1962, Keith Musto was deep in thought. Another gruelling training session. Another day out on the water, returning home freezing and soaked through, his clothing literally a dead weight. Back then he didn't know he was going to pioneer a brand that would make such significant waves in the sailing industry. But he did know there was a problem that needed solving...

OVER THE YEARS I'VE BEEN ASKED MANY TIMES WHY I STARTED MUSTO. MY ANSWER IS SIMPLE - I DIDN'T LIKE BEING COLD AND WET!

- Keith Musto

Then came the 1964 Olympics in Tokyo, when Keith and his sailing partner Tony Morgan battled their way into the British Olympic Sailing Team, against all odds. They were slick, competitive and adopted innovative sailing strategies, which made up for their lack of height and weight.

After seven days of intense competition off the coast of Enoshima, Musto and Morgan were surprisingly leading the pack. But there was on dramatic final act left to unfold...

I THINK I HAD THE TEMERITY TO SAY TO KEITH 'WE'VE DONE IT!' AND HE SAID 'LOOK OVER YOUR SHOULDER' AND WE COULD SEE NEW ZEALAND COMING UP AND THEY'D TAKEN A WILD FLYER AND WE COULD SEE WHAT WAS GOING TO HAPPEN THEN. I DON'T KNOW HOW MANY NANOSECONDS IN FRONT OF US, BUT ENOUGH TO COUNT.

- Tony Morgan

They returned home from Japan with the silver medal, and whilst the disappointment of not winning was so raw - and still is if you ask Keith today - there was also a niggling feeling that they had missed something. What was that one thing which could have made the difference and clawed back those precious seconds? That cost them the gold?

For Keith, the answer became clear, their clothing:

WE SAILED IN GUERNSEY SWEATERS AND OLD FLANNEL TROUSERS FOR YEARS. YOU GOT WET AND YOU ACCEPTED IT. BUT, AS WE PROGRESSED UP THE LADDER IN TERMS OF COMPETITION, WE REALISED THAT THIS WAS A POTENTIAL PROBLEM THAT NEEDED TO BE SOLVED. I WENT TO ONE OR TWO MANUFACTURERS WHO WERE MAKING CLOTHING AT THE TIME AND SPOKE TO THEM ABOUT IMPROVING THE DESIGNS, AND THERE WASN'T A LOT OF INTEREST. WE SOON MADE OUR MINDS UP THAT ALTHOUGH WE DIDN'T KNOW HOW TO MAKE CLOTHING, WE'D LEARN QUICKER THAN THE MANUFACTURERS AT THE TIME COULD CATCH ON TO THE FACT THAT THERE WAS A NEED AND A DEMAND FOR BETTER CLOTHING. SO, WE STARTED WORKING ON WHAT SAILORS REALLY NEEDED TO MAKE CONDITIONS BETTER FOR THEM.

- Keith Musto

It was in an old WWII prisoner of war hut in Essex that Musto was born. Starting out making sails with Edward Hyde under Musto & Hyde Sails, Keith explored options for clothing development, before completely shifting his focus to constructing technical sailing clothing. He quickly taught himself all the basics of manufacturing clothes, and with the help and insights from world-leading sailors, and fabric technicians, the first pieces of Musto clothing were created.

Over the next 60 years, Musto would go on to produce some of the most innovative and ground-breaking clothing in the sailing industry. Award winning collections, from our world-leading offshore garments to developing revolutionary dingy suits to keep our athletes comfortable during competitive conditions, have shaped the foundations of Musto. These iconic and much-loved garments are still as important to our story as ever before and stand the test of time to this day.

The relationship between Musto and its ambassadors is paramount to the success of the brand. Without these leading sailors, Musto would not be the world-leading clothing company it is today. They have pushed our clothing to its very limits, over thousands of hours and miles, and it's their diligent and extremely detailed feedback that has helped Musto to push the boundaries of innovation. Our #TeamMusto sailors are as important today as they were 60 years ago.

As well as our beloved sailors, our story wouldn't be possible without our fabric partners and specialists. They have worked with us, and at times, challenged us, to push the boundaries of possibilities and create ground-breaking product that can withstand the rigorous demands of our customers.

Together, with our sailors, specialist fabrics, and talented staff, Musto has carved out a timeline of iconic and memorable moments with the brand's 60-year history. Protecting our sailors has been at the heart of everything we do, and we have been rewarded in sharing those wins, losses, successes and failures, record-breaking achievements and future-shaping moments with them. From Dame Ellen MacArthur paving the way for women in sailing, to Connie Van Rietschoten trusting our new Gore-Tex fabrics on his Whitbread Round the World win, our heritage is rich with memories shared with you.
