Cameron Appleton, a name is synonymous with high performance sailing, announced his new position as a Partner of Doyle Sails Newport alongside fellow partners Alex Clegg, Dave MacMillan and Rob MacMillan.
The appointment sees Appleton become the Doyle Sails Grand Prix and Superyacht expert in the Newport, RI and greater New England region and form part of the Doyle Sails International Grand Prix and Superyacht sales team.
For the past 18 years, Appleton, originally from New Zealand, has made Newport his home, with his tenure in the sailing industry solidifying his status as a leading tactician, skipper and project manager. Regarded as one of the most diverse sailors, Appleton works closely with the design and sailing teams to maintain and update developments ensuring they move ahead to, or remain at the front of every fleet.
Cameron Appleton comments, “My career has taken me through a full range of boats from the smaller one-design to the largest superyachts, and I have seen Doyle’s impressive rise to the forefront of the industry. They lead development design and technology development due to its impressive “Doyle ethos“, and the depth of sailors driving the product and leading the way is exciting to now be a part of.”
The Doyle Sails ethos, “by sailors, for sailors,” continues to strengthen with yet another world-class sailor choosing Doyle Sails. The phrase has underscored the company’s strategy to design and build the world’s best sails, provide world class service and form integral parts of teams to support owners and crews while ultimately delivering results. A statement echoed by the many trophies and leaderboards that have featured Doyle powered teams this year alone. The inclusion of the highly regarded Cameron Appleton strengthens the already weighty powerhouse list which includes Stu Bannatyne, Justin Ferris, Mike Sanderson, Richard Bouzaid, Luke Molloy and more. This collection of knowledge and integral feedback loop from sailors on the water through to the design and research & development teams, forms the basis of all Doyle Sails technology and why it continues to lead the fleet in innovation.
“We’re thrilled that Cameron is joining us at Doyle Sails Newport. Cam’s talent, drive, and deep care for sailors and the sport will enrich how we serve our clientele and the community”, comments Dave MacMillan.
With a love of sailing that was fostered at an early age, Appleton went on to graduate from the prestigious Royal New Zealand Squadron Youth Programme, a programme which was world renowned for producing the best sailors in the world. Shortly after graduating, Appleton was a name that quickly rose to fame with his success at the 1996 Coca-Cola Youth Match Racing World Championships. These early results propelled him into the spotlight and ultimately led to his pivotal role in Team New Zealand’s successful 2000 America’s Cup defence.
Throughout his career, Appleton’s skill and dedication has earned him an impressive collection of titles, including ten World Championships with three Farr 30, 2 x Melges 32, 2 x RC44, 2 x Maxi Worlds and 2 x 12M titles. All of which sit alongside a string of impressive Maxi 72, TP52 and Superyacht victories, amongst all of which he plays a vital role.
