We are excited to announce that registration is now open for the 2024 INSA Junior Sabot Nationals, which will be held at San Diego Yacht Club July 29 through August 1! Make sure to register online before 1700 on June 14 to avoid late entry fees.
For the first time since 1962, the INSA Junior Sabot Nationals is returning to SDYC, making it an unprecedented event in the modern history of the Junior Sabot Nationals. While this marks an exciting new development for the Sabot Fleet, it is also a return to form in many ways, with a qualification series limiting the championship series to 120 boats and the Cove Cup Consolation Regatta.
This long-anticipated and thrilling four day event will include upwards of 150 competitors from the most prestigious yacht clubs in Southern California. Races will be taking place in the picturesque La Playa Turning Basin just to the west of the San Diego Yacht Club. With plentiful spectating options lining the perimeter of the race venue, parents and racers alike will have the opportunity to enjoy a stunning, stadium-style view of the racecourse.
In addition to action-packed racing, the event will include lively social activities and several amenities for competitors and their families. Festivities kick off with a formal opening ceremony on Monday night, with many previous champions making an appearance, and will continue on with a regatta dinner, ice cream social, pool party, and more racing until a champion is crowned on the Historic Front Deck. Parents will have access to a semi-private, quiet work area with high-speed wireless internet, an adults-only cocktail hour and on-site vendors for last minute boat repairs and upgrades if desired. Discounted hotel rooms are available for visiting competitors through the event website, where you will also find recommendations for local dining options, boat supply retailers, and up-to-date news on the event.
SDYC Jr. Board Sabot A-Fleet Captain, Vester Gronborg, commented on the highly anticipated event: "As Captain of A Fleet, I am very excited for this year's Sabot Nationals because we have not had a Nationals here in over 60 years. I am excited to have other Southern California sailors compete in our home waters on La Playa. SDYC Junior Sailing has had a great year and I believe we will have an even better Nationals."
Many past participants will be returning to the event, including the 2023 champion, Will Ramsay from Newport Harbor Yacht Club. Ramsay expressed his excitement about joining the Jr. Sabot Nationals in La Playa, saying, "SDYC is always a fun place with a rich sailing history, and I'm thrilled to be part of it. My preparation for this year? Just like for any regatta: sail fast, sail clean, and have fun!"
