Enterprise National Championships at Penzance Sailing Club - Day 3

by Steve Sargent 31 May 2023 21:06 NZST 27-31 May 2023

Competitors arrived at the club to be greeted by similar conditions to Day 2 started with 15 to 16 knots easterly and everyone expected a similar scenario as before with the wind spinning and dying.

With the race officer Marcus arriving following some window restoration at his local business it was sounding like he might be 15 minutes and the AP was raised. Having completed the restoration AP was down, D was hoisted, and the fleet were away.

With a fairly unbiased line the fleet were away cleanly first time with current leaders Nigel & Andy Bird choosing to go left together with other leading contenders. With a number of players choosing to go right, Phil Ford & Jonathon Woodward played the shifts up the middle to go round 1 and 2 with Tim Sadler rounding third.

Places remained unchanged for the first round but the second beat saw snakes and ladders. Martin Honnor & Isobel Hedley-Fenn favoured the right and made good progress up the fleet rounding with Dave Jackman & Mark Puckey, only to miss the spacer mark and drop to 11th when re-rounding.

Phil & Jane went on to seal a comprehensive win, with Tim & Salty sneaking past Jonathan & Dan to take second. Former National champion Dave Jackman finished fourth with the returning Vince Horey completing the top five.

Race 2 was quickly under way with another good line allowing the fleet to get away cleanly, Phil Ford made a great start to roll Martin, forcing Martin to the right with Phil pitching to the left for the start of the beat.

Places were tight at the windward mark with Phil arriving on starboard, Martin, Tim and Vince all arriving on Port. Phil cleared the mark to lead with Tim rounding second Martin and Vince battling for third.

Unseen by the leaders, Steve Sargent & Eloise Jaycock showed good speed to roll Timmy and move to third. Martin overtook Phil before the wing mark and then pulled nicely clear to build a comfortable lead, ensuring his first bullet of the week. Timmy rolled Sarge & Phil on the second reach to round the leeward mark in second.

Martin & Tim played the right while Sarge picked some nice shifts on the left to retake Timmy and pull up to second. Timmy managed to create and overlap on the run and round the final leeward mark second, the final beat was a game of loose covering and positions remained unchanged, Martin taking first, Timmy second, Sarge third with Phil crossing closely behind Sarge and a smiling Ann Jackson in fifth.
