With an average wind speed forecasted to be averaging 15 kt and southerly wind, it looked like ideal conditions for racing on the Menai Strait in the Clwb Hwylio Y Felinheli Christmas Regatta.
However, with actual speeds varying from 5 kt to 25 kt (therefore averaging 15 kt!), and with a wind slightly off the land, conditions made for exciting and occasionally frustrating racing. Aided by wind-with-tide flattening the water as a measure of their competence only a few went swimming.
An entry of 27 boats with travellers from England, Scotland and Wales; the bookies favourite for the fast handicap class was a crew from Ireland and so it turned out.
Two races were held, then lunch, then fog (we never get fog!) but after a short postponement, with only a slight reduction in gusts, a further race was held, enabling a discard to kick in.
Crews were expected to sleep well that night.
