F18 World Championship at Sarasota Sailing Squadron - Overall

by Ellinor Walters 21 Oct 2018 20:12 NZDT 12-19 October 2018

The sun set just beyond the pavilion on the Sarasota Sailing Squadron grounds, as winners Iordanis Paschalidi and Konstantinos Trigonis accepted the ultimate trophy, World Champions of the F18 class.

After a week of tricky conditions, the Greek team prevailed with a 20 point separation between them and the second place finishers, USA 11, Tripp Burd and Michael Easton. Third place went to American team Taylor Reiss and Matthew Whitehead.

As trailers were packed, and excitement died down, Burd had to say of the racing "It was a fantastic and challenging race course, the organization was excellent. It's a pleasure to be a part of such a fun and active class and win or lose we were glad to see our friends from around the world." Burd and Easton have a long history of competing together and were thrilled to place second against elite competition.

The top final day of racing was extremely competitive, leaving just ten points between second and fifth place.

The regatta concluded with two early races before competitors headed back to the dock to de-rigg and pack up boats. The closing ceremonies allowed for some final thoughts, and the awarding of the "great pumpkin" trophy to class president Todd Riccardi, for his service to the class. Two junior teams were recognized for their participation, and Lucy Nissen was recognized as the top finishing female skipper in the event.

The F18 Class would like to thank all of our volunteers, judges, and supporters from around the world who make the World Championships, not only a fair and safe regatta, but a fun one.
