38th GAES Christmas Race in Palamós - Day 3

by Jaume Soler 21 Dec 2013 03:53 NZDT 17-22 December 2013

Strong winds and no racing

The Tramuntana N wind with gusts of up to 60 knots on day three at the 38 GAES Christmas Race has forced the Race Committee to cancel racing for today.

The strong N wind began to blow in Palamós following the rain of the night. The wind began in the early hours of the morning and gained strength at dawn. Sailors gathered at the Club de Vela Palamós and Club Nàutic Costa Brava while the wind kept blowing with an average of 35 knots.

At 12.25h the PRO of the GAES Christmas Race, Carles Palomares, officially announced the cancellation of today's racing because N wind with an average of 30 knots was forecasted until late afternoon. Palomares explained that the wind was extremely strong and it was impossible to attempt any racing so tomorrow they will try to sail more races by bringing the warning signal of the first races one hour forward.

Enric Agud, the regatta weather forecast man explained that the Tramuntana wind was well established and it was not probable that it would lose strength during the afternoon. "Waves are not a problem, it's a wind from the land, the handicap are the gusts that easily reach 35-40 knots and even up to 60 knots. Impossible".

The forecast for tomorrow announces NW wind in the early hours around seven to eight knots changing to SE, 6 knots.

This is the reason why the Organisers have decided to advance the first warning signals of the day to 10.00h.

Tomorrow will be the last day for the 29ers that are sailing the Copa de España with the prize giving being held tomorrow at 16.00h at the beach venue. The Medal races on Sunday 22 will mark the end for the remaining classes.
