International Laser II World Championships to be held in UK

by Mike Croker 28 Feb 2009 22:34 NZDT 18-24 July 2009

This will be the 9th Laser II world championships, and the 3rd to be held in the UK. As befits its 30th birth year and history as former IYRU Youth Boat, the UK Class Association has secured the use of the 2012 Olympic Sailing venue at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy to ensure a first class event.

With the help of our sponsors, Northampton Sailboats, Towergate Mardon, SailSport (chandlery), Noble Marine (dinghy insurance), Hyde Sails and Gill (clothing), we intend to put on an entertaining social programme to match this fantastic racing venue! We are also fortunate in securing the services of Fotoboat as official event photographers, and look forward to admiring some stunning images of the racing in Weymouth bay.

So far we have interest and likely entrants from Holland, Germany, Italy, Ireland, USA and Canada, as well as from Great Britain. As it's now 30 years since the first production Laser II appeared at the Melbourne Sailboat show, we are keen to invite as many former sailors as possible to attend the prizegiving dinner on 24 July to help make it a truly memorable birthday party.

All event details will be posted on the dedicated worlds' website, www.worlds.laser2sailing.org as they become available.
